BOX (Melancholy No. 3, andante)

Author, choreographer, dancer: Mitja Obed

Premiere: 21. February 2015

The dance project “Box” (Melancholy No. 3, andante) was born out of the desire of discovering the boundaries of the human being as such.  The concept is based in the illusion of us being unrestricted life forms, and this is interpreted through movement, expression and rhythm. The dancer uses his body as a medium for revealing the deception of our senses, experiences an understandings of boundlessness.

Perceiving the existence of those “less privileged” (disabled in any manner), seemingly limited in expressing themselves to the same extent as ourselves, leads to empathy, contemplation, examination, melancholy. Other people's disabilities reveal to us our own constraints, our own “box”, and finally the acceptance of the limited nature of our existence. The emphasis is put on moving past our boundaries, not out of an urgency to merely expand the box but to acknowledge the world as an undefined coincidence of actions and reactions.

This solo dance performance is based on flamenco rhythm, expression and movement, but with a more modern approach and interpretation. The dance movement is defined as a compound of flamenco and contemporary ballet, all in order to liberate the expression in fullness and to acquire more complex scenic forms.

The length of the performance is 30 minutes. It employs flamenco experimental, classical and modern classical music.
